A home for every block

August 22, 2011

This is what my son of 8 did the min he saw these blocks. He is super excited to do math this year!

My other son age 5 helped me unpack our boxes and arrange out two sets in the wooden box, and while we were putting themaway I was telling him how they all had families and such, he fell in love with the units immediately and liked the tens, was impressed with the hundreds but….when we came to the end, he saw we had two tens that didn’t fit….he was all dad and cradled them in his arms and told me that these two tens would be sad without their family….then while holding them, he said in his sorrowful voice, “mom, can I take care of them? I won’t let them be lonely.” awe!!! So sweet, right…he loves to talk about family and loves to point out how many people are in our family, so I think this was the best choice of curriculum for my two boys! Thank you for coming up with such a great idea!!!!!

I remember when I started Math U See and when I looked at the blocks, all I wanted to do was play lego…or computer.

My dd5 (Kindergarten/Primer) also LOVES the math blocks and builds houses, towers, etc. She started playing with them when she was 2 or 3, when her older brother started MUS. However she gets frustrated because they don’t snap together firmly. SUGGESTION: Would it be possible for MUS to acquire math blocks that snap together better (more like Legos)? This would greatly improve them! I realize that ‘snapability’ is not essential for purposes of learning math (although, I seem to recall the MUS textbooks/ videos suggested connecting or snapping them together?), but the blocks would be a better value and–I think–would further reinforce the math concepts the longer kids are engaged in play with them. If you would improve them in this manner I would be the first in line to purchase a set. I even considered purchasing Legos that would substitute but the Lego “studs” just don’t equate to the math blocks “squares,” not to mention that the math blocks are color coded etc. Just a thought!
