It’s hot outside and that means it’s summer. With summer comes the question all homeschoolers and educators ask… Will my students forget everything they have learned? Should I review? Should I school year round?
I remember back to summers in my younger days. We didn’t do any schoolwork but we were still learning. We visited historical sites, learned about nature, visited state parks, learned about the stars at night, oh and my dad had us do some math review during the summer

All grown up and still learning
What are your summer plans? Are you going to teach all the way through, review occasionally, just have fun or a combination. Leave a comment and lets us know.

Since I really see learning as a lifestyle we do not change our schedule much during the summer , altho we change the pattern up. Usually the kids are done with a level by November and we don’t buy new curriculum until January so if ever there was a *vacation* around here it would be a winter one and not summer.
Still, we have plenty of time to run to the creek for a swim, ride horses, or check out various interesting places.

We tend to take a good 3 week break in July and then slowly get back into a schooling schedule again. I try to get my boys to do a few math problems during the 3 weeks off to keep their skills sharp but that’s less than 15 minutes worth for them. They’re happy to have a break.

I think i will just carry on as usual ,as things are not that structured time wise,i tend to just get them doing school stuff as and when we fit it in during the day .We have time out and about all the year round so we just carry on.I won’t be starting new things though until september and i hope to review the things they have done over the last year too.

We will sometimes do some bookwork when the boys are getting a little bored but otherwise I let them explore the creek and woods near our house where the find crayfish, snakes, turtles, wild berries and other treasures.
One Saturday a month we head to the conservation Department for family activities and pick up more literature on foliage and wildlife. This month we made wren houses and stamped t-shirts with rubber fish. Next month we will be attending a workshop on how to build a 14′ canoe with 2 sheets of plywood and other basic supplies. Hope it is fun.

We are loving our t-shirts!!! The kids were so thrilled to receive their package and I have “Chocol=8″ in the washer constantly because it gets put back on again as soon as it is clean. Thank you for making our summer so fun. My 7 year old has just finished his first 7 Gamma lessons in 6 days.

We’ve been working on math, reading and just a bit of other formal schoolwork “stuff” over the summer. Math is done about 2 days per week (sometimes 3). Reading is daily. We love Math-U-See and thank you for blessing us with it.
Blessings,

In my experience homeschooling my two boys, children learn 24-7 unless you actively try to stop them (the way certain public schools do). Kite flying is an education in aerodynamics (http://www.first-to-fly.com/ build your own wright brothers style kite here). One sunny day at the zoo can teach a child more than a semester of biology (without the muscle atrophy from sitting at a desk 7 hours straight). Spekaing of health, swim lessons at the YMCA make for a great summer PT program. Comparing Net weights and prices at the Icecream truck to get the most for your money is a great intro to economics. As long as you keep answering questions your child will never “Take a break” from learning. And if you’re anything like me, neither will you.
